You don’t need a minute-by-minute plan. Just a loose route, an open mind and a sense of adventure.

Maybe there’s a region you’ve always wanted to check out. Or someone once said, “You’ve got to see that place!” and it stuck. Grab a map or an app, but let your gut lead the way.

I once rolled off the ferry from Dunkirk in France to Dover in England with zero plans, no bookings, no idea where I’d crash that night. What followed was a zigzag across southern England, picking roads at random during an entire week.

It felt wild. Until border control in Dover freaked out when I couldn’t prove where I’d stayed before. My car got searched top to bottom like I was smuggling tea bags. I had to convince them I was just a writer chasing stories. This was before hashtags, brand deals and perfectly filtered travel pics took over our social media. I almost missed the ferry back to France.

Sleep as You Go

Unless your time’s tight, skip pre-booked places. Let the road tell you when to stop.

When the sun drops, scout the options: a local inn, campsite, roadside hostel or that granny’s guest room with lace curtains and solid wi-fi. No apps, just instincts.

On another ride, a mate and I set out for the Vosges Mountains in France from Belgium. A “short trip” we said. We passed through Luxembourg and rolled into the Vosges, but later we meandered also through the Jura Mountains and found ourselves on the shores of Lake Geneva with a view to Switzerland.

Then came the real curveball. Standing on a glacier near Mont Blanc in the Alps, snow crunching under our feet in the middle of summer. We nearly drove to Italy but turned back just before the border. Zero plans. No regrets.

Fuel for Body & Ride

Never wait until your tank’s crying for mercy. Same rule for your stomach. Remote stations are rare and often cost more.

Swing by small towns for cheaper fuel and tastier bites. Local bakeries, roadside diners, tiny markets. This is where the gold is.

See a giant shoe sculpture off the road? Stop. A sign for “World’s Smallest Castle”? You bet.
