AI Statement
The Just Hanan AI Statement: our view on artificial intelligence
Karena bahasa utama dan kerja kami adalah bahasa Inggris, nilai ‘AI Statement’ ini ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Jika ingin versi bahasa Indonesia, anda bisa bertanya melalui halaman kontak.
Artificial intelligence will play an increasingly significant role across all areas of society, including the media. The possibilities are vast: AI can support the gathering, writing, illustration and distribution of content. At the same time, there are real risks. The data used to train AI models is often biased and systems are not immune to so-called hallucinations. There are also important questions around copyright and privacy.
Responsible use of AI at Just Hanan
We use AI responsibly and act in good faith at all times.
We are committed to transparent communication about how AI is used. This AI Statement outlines our approach through a series of commonly asked questions and reinforces our ambition to remain a trustworthy media platform.
Because AI is evolving rapidly, this statement will be reviewed regularly and updated where necessary.
What is artificial intelligence?
We follow the definition of artificial intelligence (AI) as set out in the European AI Act, aligned with definitions used by international organisations.
Definition:
“An AI system is a machine-based system designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy and that may exhibit adaptiveness after deployment. Based on the input it receives, it generates outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments.”
That’s the theory. In practice, it comes down to this:
- Artificial intelligence is software capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as writing text, recognising images or translating languages.
- Early AI systems work by identifying patterns in large datasets. Newer systems, known as generative AI, can create entirely new content. Tools such as ChatGPT (from Open AI), Copilot (from Microsoft), Gemini (from Google) and Claude (from Anthropic) can generate text, images, videos and audio on request. While the output may appear convincingly human, it’s based on statistical patterns rather than true understanding or consciousness.
- AI is powerful but still experimental. It can make mistakes, produce inaccurate information or reflect biases present in training data. For that reason, human oversight remains essential for us.
When does Just Hanan use AI?
AI is used strictly as a support tool. We apply it thoughtfully and only when it clearly adds value. Examples include:
Inspiration
Analysing large volumes of data to uncover relevant insights or stories.
Translation and summarisation
Translating foreign-language content and summarising videos or audio to improve access to reliable sources.
Content adaptation
Transforming stories into different formats, such as summaries or social media posts. As we are active across multiple social media platforms, we aim to provide as many users as possible with reliable articles.
Accessibility
Improving accessibility by adding features such as alt text for images, making content more inclusive for visually impaired readers.
How does Just Hanan ensure responsible AI use?
1. Core principles and standards
Our editorial standards remain unchanged, regardless of the tools used. Readers must always be able to trust the accuracy and integrity of our content, including when AI is involved. Everything we create must meet our standards.
AI can deliver impressive results, but it’s not flawless. Outputs may be incorrect, oversimplified or misleading. Every result is critically reviewed, cross-checked with reliable sources and assessed independently by us. Final decisions are always made by us without AI involvement.
As a result, AI is not used by us for real-time, critical or time-sensitive applications where proper verification isn’t possible.
2. Reliable AI systems
We only use trusted AI systems that have been thoroughly tested. Outputs are evaluated for accuracy, bias and respect for copyright.
Approved systems are continuously monitored and adjusted where needed.
3. Transparency
Transparency is central to responsible AI use.
We clearly and transparently inform users when an article, or part of it, has been fully or partially generated by AI through automated processes without human intervention.
When AI is used purely as a technical tool (for example for translation, spell-checking, brainstorming or layout), this isn’t explicitly communicated. We will, of course, carry out an editorial review where necessary.
4. Realistic representation
We will present a realistic representation of reality.
AI-generated audio of voices isn’t used by us, unless generative AI itself is the subject of the content. The same applies to deepfakes and voice cloning. Legal restrictions apply and voices of real individuals can’t be replicated without consent.
If, in exceptional cases, we generate such material by AI, there will be no possibility of confusion for the user. If such material is ever used, we clearly label this to avoid any confusion.
5. Caution
Any input entered into external AI systems is processed on external servers, which carries risks such as breaches of confidentiality, privacy or GPDR rules violations, or data leaks.
For AI systems that don’t run on servers we can control, only publicly available information is used.
We also treat AI output with caution. Since models are trained on publicly available material, including copyrighted content, outputs are never adopted blindly by us. This helps avoid potential copyright issues (for example, if the output shows similarities to an existing text, photo or image).
6. Monitoring AI developments
AI will continue to evolve rapidly. These guidelines provide a foundation, but ongoing monitoring is essential. We continuously evaluate the tools we use.
Just Hanan’s AI principles in short
- No matter how impressive AI may seem, it’s far from infallible. We check all AI output.
- We take the time to review the results of AI systems and therefore don’t use them for live, critical or time-sensitive output.
- The algorithms behind AI systems are often difficult to interpret. We only use systems that have been tested and/or approved.
- If AI systems have a substantive impact on articles, the reader, viewer or listener must be aware of this. We communicate this in such cases.
- We describe reality and don’t engage in fiction. If content is fictional, this is clearly communicated by us.
- Using AI to replicate the voices, photos or videos of real people without their consent is legally prohibited. We don’t use such material.
What does Just Hanan not use AI for?
AI isn’t suitable for every task in the production of an article. If an application of AI doesn’t strengthen us or conflicts with our values, it isn’t used. These are some examples of what we don’t entrust to AI:
AI never has the final say
We use AI to suggest titles, evaluate language and style, generate summaries, or create initial drafts based on carefully selected data. However, in all of these cases, we have the final say and take responsibility for reviewing and improving the output where necessary before publication.
AI doesn’t set the agenda
Which topics deserve attention or priority on the website or social media isn’t determined automatically by AI. AI may provide insights and recommendations, but editorial decisions, what topics matter and what gets published, are made by us, not by AI.
No automated fact-checking
AI software is used as a support tool in fact-checking, but determining what is true remains our responsibility.
